Description

A patient with a congenital heart disease may be at increased risk for complications following noncardiac surgery. Surgery at a center that specializes in these patients should be considered.


 

Parameters:

(1) pulmonary hypertension (primary or secondary)

(2) cyanotic congenital heart disease

(3) NYHA functional class III or IV

(4) systemic ventricular dysfunction (ejection fraction)

(5) left-sided heart obstructive lesions

(6) prosthetic valve or conduit

(7) intracardiac shunt

Other factors associated with increased risk with noncardiac surgery:

(1) history of a Fontan procedure

(2) need for anticoagulation

(3) presence of a malignant arrhythmia
