Yang et al reported a simple score for identifying a patient with acute kidney injury (AKI) and need for unplanned renal replacement therapy after cardiac catheterization. The authors are from Southern Medical University and the Affiliated Guangong Provincial People's Hospital of South China University of Technology in China.
Patient selection: cardiac catheterization with IV contrast
Parameters:
(1) age in years
(2) serum creatinine in mg/dL (timing needs to be determined)
(3) diabetes mellitus
(4) hypotension
(5) acute myocardial infarction

Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 7
• The risk for unplanned renal replacement therapy increases as the score increases.
