Description

Obokata et al reported two score for predicting the risk of the metabolic syndrome in Japanese patients. The final model can help to identify a patient who should be targeted for interventions to reverse the metabolic changes. The authors are from Gunma University, Gunma Chuo Hospital and the University of Tasmania.

Patient selection: Japanese adults

Parameters:

(1) serum HDL cholesterol concentration

(2) abdominal obesity

(3) hyperglycemia

(4) hypertension

(5) serum triglyceride concentration

(6) sex

(7) serum gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase in IU/L (GGT)

(8) age in years

(9) serum uric acid in mg/dL

Interpretation:

minimum score: 0

maximum score: 60

The higher the score the greater the risk of metabolic syndrome.
