Description

Ko et al reported a simple score for screening a Chinese adult in Hong Kong for type 2 diabetes. This can help to identify a patient to test for diabetes. The authors are from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.


Patient selection: Hong Kong Chinese adult

 

Parameters:

(1) age in years

(2) body mass index in kg per square meter

(3) hypertension (blood pressure >= 140/90 mm Hg; hypertension diagnosed with or without antihypertensive medication)

(4) dyslipidemia (serum total cholesterol >= 5.2 mmol/L; fasting serum triglyceride >= 2.3 mmol/L; HDL cholesterol < 1.0 mmol/L)

(5) family history of diabetes

(6) history of gestational diabetes

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 30

• The higher the score the greater the probability of diabetes.

• A score >=18 had a probability of type 2 diabetes > 50%.
