Description

Gao et al reported a score for identifying a Chinese adult at risk for undiagnosed diabetes.  The authors are from the University of Helsinki, National Institute for Health and Welfare (Helsinki), Qingdao Municipal Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, and Hong Kong Institute for Diabetes and Obesity.

Patient selection: adult from 20 to 74 years of age

Parameters:

(1) waist in cm

(2) sex

(3) age in years

(4) diabetes in family members (parents and/or sibling)

where:

• The table shows waist circumference in "chi" which is reported to be about 33 cm.

total score =

= SUM(points for the parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 3

• maximum score: 32

• A score >= 14 is associated with increased risk for undiagnosed diabetes.

Performance:

• At the cutoff the sensitivity was 0.84 and the specificity 0.40.

• The area under the ROC curve is 0.64 for males and 0.68 for females.
