Description

A person working or traveling in a region endemic for Coccidioides immitis can reduce the risk of coccidioidomycosis by taking certain precautions. However, it is impossible to completely eliminate the risk.

Risk reduction strategies:

(1) Schedule outdoor activities during the winter months.

(2) Avoid or reduce activities in areas most favorable for C. immitis occurrence.

(3) Utilize dust control methods and wear fitted dust masks.

(4) Have a coccidioidin skin test. If negative, take extra precautions while working in dusty conditions.

(5) Seek prompt evaluation of a flu-like or respiratory illness that occurs during or within a few weeks of potential exposure in an endemic region.

(6) Notify physician of possible exposure history.

(7) Educate all persons in the travel party about the disease, its risk factors and preventive measures.

(8) Persons with one or more risk factors for disseminated coccidioidomycosis should reconsider plans. If a potential exposure cannot be avoided, then the person should be especially carefully to adhere to precautions.
