Description

The risk of harm equation can be used to estimate the risk of serious accident while driving in a patient with a disabling condition.

Parameters:

(1) annual proportion of time driving

(2) type of vehicle being driven (0.28 for passenger car, 1.0 for commercial heavy truck)

(3) annual probability of recurrence (estimated at 0.01 for sudden cardiac incapacitation and 0.141 for syncope)

(4) probability of injury or accident (0.02 for sudden cardiac incapacitation)

number of hours per year =

= 365 * 24 = 8760

annual proportion of time driving =

= (number of hours driving during the year) / 8760

risk of harm =

= (annual proportion) * (type of vehicle) * (annual probability of recurrence) * (probability of injury or accident if event occurs)

Interpretation:

An acceptable risk of harm is specified. For sudden cardiac incapacitation in Canada it is 0.005%.

A calculated risk of harm that exceeds the acceptable risk of harm may indicate a driver who should have driving restricted.
