Home fires caused by candles have increased significantly, as candles have become more popular.


 

Risk factors for fire associated with candles:

(1) leaving the candle burning unattended

(2) leaving a burning candle where a small child or animal can knock it over

(3) burning a candle near something flammable

(4) falling asleep while a candle is lit

(5) using a candle for light (during an emergency, power outage, utilities turned off)

(6) intoxication with drugs and/or alcohol

(7) being played with by a child

 

Candles should:

(1) be put out if no one will be in the room

(2) be completely out before going to bed

(3) be kept away from anything flammable

(4) be in a candle holder large enough to collect dripping wax and one that is unlikely to tip over

(5) be in a non-flammable candle holder

(6) be kept out of reach of children and pets
