Description

Emerson et al studied factors associated with disease progression in men with squamous cell carcinoma of the penis. The authors are from the Indiana University School of Medicine.

Risk for cancer progression (Tumor progression = either lymph node metastasis or distant metastasis):

(1) depth of invasion in mm

(2) vascular invasion present (100% if vascular invasion present; 33% if absent)

where:

• Depth of invasion is measured from the basement membrane of the squamous epithelium to the deepest point of invasion shown by the malignant cells.

• In patients with progression, 4 patients had a depth of invasion from 1.9 to 5.0 mm, but only 1 patient was in the range 5.0 to 9.8 mm.
