Description

A patient with a seizure disorder is at increased risk for burns, especially scalds.


Scald injury can occur:

(1) during a hot shower

(2) while cooking

(3) while drinking hot liquids

 

Flame injury can occur:

(1) while cooking

(2) near an open flame

 

Contact burns can occur:

(1) radiator

(2) hot stove

(3) hot pot or pan

(4) electric iron

 

Chemical burns could also be a concern depending on which chemicals that the person comes in contact with.

 

Risk factors for burns:

(1) severe seizure disorder

(2) poorly controlled seizure disorder

(3) failure to implement protective measures

(4) loss of consciousness during seizure

 

The burns may be misdiagnosed if the history of a burn is not elicited. Misdiagnosis may include:

(1) bullous skin disorder

(2) elder abuse
