Description

Some men who use testosterone may suffer a thromboembolic event. Some of these patients may have an underlying thrombophilia which may have gone unrecognized.

Thrombotic events may include:

(1) acute myocardial infarction

(2) stroke

(3) deep vein thrombosis

(4) pulmonary embolism

(5) amaurosis fugax

(6) osteonecrosis

If a man who is taking testosterone has an unexplained thrombosis, then he should be evaluated for a hypercoagulable state.

If a man is to be started on testosterone then he should be screened for evidence of a hypercoagulable state (Factor V Leiden, prothrombin gnee mutation, homocysteine).

If a man has a history of significant cardiovascular disease, then the risk of testosterone should be seriously considered before starting the therapy.
