Description

A woman undergoing childbirth may develop the post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) afterwards.PTSD may overlap with postpartum depression or other psychiatric issues.

Risk factors for PTSD may include (Liu et al, Ertan et al):

(1) presence of postpartum depression

(2) low social support

(3) first pregnancy (nulliparous; having at least one child protective)

(4) emergency or difficult childbirth

(5) past traumatic events (pre-existing PTSD)

 

It is important to identify postpartum depression or PTSD to optimize outcomes for the mother, child and partner.
