Description

Lee et al identified risk factors associated with ICU admission and death in patients with the Severe Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (SARS) in Hong Kong. This can help identify patients who may require more aggressive management and closer monitoring. The authors are from the Chinese University and Prince of Wales Hospitals in Hong Kong.

Risk factors associated with increased risk of ICU admission and death:

(1) increasing age

(2) peak lactate dehydrogenase (LD) in IU/L

(3) absolute neutrophil count on presentation exceeding the upper limit of the normal reference range

According to Table 2, page 1992, the age of patients:

(1) not admitted to the ICU had a mean of 36 years with SD 14.6

(2) admitted to the ICU or death had a mean of 50 years with SD 18.4

Limitations:

• The method and reference range for LD were not given (at least I was unable to find this reported). This reduces transportability.
