CMV enteritis refers to cytomegalovirus infection of the small intestine. Yeh et al reported a variety of factors related to CMV enteritis. Diagnosis can be challenging due to the difficulty in obtaining biopsy material. The authors are from Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan.
Clinical findings may include:
(1) GI bleeding, typically with hematochezia
(2) abdominal pain
(3) fever
(4) mucosal ulcerations
Risk factors for CMV enteritis:
(1) immunocompromised status/immunodeficiency
(2) steroid therapy
(3) shock
(4) concurrent pneumonia
(5) antibiotic exposure
(6) radiotherapy
(7) chronic kidney disease
(8) CMV colitis
Risk factors for in-hospital mortality:
(1) history of radiotherapy
(2) elevated serum C-reactive protein
