Description

Yang et al identified risk factors for surgical site infection (SSI) following hepatectomy. A patient with multiple risk factors may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from the Second Military Medical University (Shanghai) and the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Patient selection: hepatectomy

Outcome: surgical site infection

Risk factors:

(1) body mass index >= 30 kg per square meter (obesity, odds ratio 1.6)

(2) diabetes mellitus (odds ratio 1.4)

(3) ASA score >= 2 (odds ratio 1.4)

(4) cirrhosis (odds ratio 1.6)

(5) repeat hepatectomy (odds ratio 1.2)

(6) hepatolithiasis (odds ratio 1.8)

(7) abdominal drain in place >= 5 days (odds ratio 1.5)

(8) intraoperative blood transfusion (odds ratio 1.6)

None of the risk factors had an odds ratio > 1.8.

5 factors are known prior to surgery.

2 factors are known at the time of surgery.

1 factor is known during the week after surgery.
