Yang et al reported risk factor for incident dementia after transient ischemic attack (TIA) or stroke. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from a more aggressive management. The authors are multiple institutions in Hong Kong and Nanjing. China.
Patient: history of transient ischemic attack (TIA) or stroke
Outcome: vascular dementia
Risk factors for incident dementia:
(1) older age (OR 1.13 per year; 79.9 +/- 9 for dementia vs 68.2 +/- 11 for no-dementia)
(2) brain changes (see next)
(3) diabetes mellitus (OR 1.9)
Brain changes included:
(1) age-related white matter changes (ARWMC, OR 1.1 based on total ARWMC score)
(2) Alzheimer-like Pittsburg compound B PET uptake
(3) medial temporal lobe atrophy (MTLA; OR 2.2))
