Description

Yang et al reported risk factors for cognitive impairment in a patient with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Cognitive impairment is associated with a worse prognosis and quality of life. The authors are from Sichuan University in Chengdu, China.


Patient selection: amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)

 

Predictors of cognitive impairment:

(1) C9orf72 (OR 3.6)

(2) dysarthria (OR 2.3)

(3) family history of ALS (OR 1.8)

(4) predominant upper motor neuron phenotype (OR 1.7)

(5) bulbar onset (OR 1.5)

 

Predictors of frontotemporal dementia:

(1) C9orf72 (OR 5.9)

(5) bulbar onset (OR 2.1)

 

Predictors of executive function impairment:

(1) female sex (OR 1.8)
