Description

Yan et al evaluated patients with lung cancer who developed invasive aspergillosis. They identified risk factors related to developing and dying from invasive aspergillosis. The authors are from Sichuan University in Chengdu, China.


 

Patient population: 45 patients with aspergillosis out of 1,711 Chinese patients with lung cancer

 

Risk factor for developing invasive aspergillosis:

(1) clinical stage IV lung cancer (odds ratio 2.2)

 

Risk factors for dying from invasive aspergillosis:

(1) therapy with corticosteroids

(2) Grade 3 or 4 neutropenia (by the CTC criteria)

 

Additional risk factors for dying from nvasive aspergillosis might include:

(1) other forms of immunosuppression

(2) delay in diagnosis
