Description

Yamamoto et identified risk factors for severe lymphosclerosis in the lower extremity following cancer therapy. Severe lymphosclerosis makes a lymphatic anastomosis procedure for relief of lymphedema difficult. The authors are from Tokyo Metropolitan Bokutoh Hospital and the University of Tokyo.

Patient selection: lymphedema of a lower extremity following cancer therapy

Risk factors for severe lymphosclerosis:

(1) body mass index >= 25 kg per square meter

(2) incision site in thigh or foot (versus groin)

(3) indocyanine green lymphography showing a S-region (splash or stardust pattern) or D-region pattern (diffuse pattern) versus L-region (linear pattern

where:

• The reason for the incision is not clear. It most likely refers to the site where the incision for a lymphatic anastomosis procedure would be performed.

Factors reducing the risk of severe lymphosclerosis:

(1) radiation therapy (field not specified)
