Description

Xu et al identified risk factors for deep knee infection after an intra-articular injection. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from General Hospital of People's Liberation Army in Beijing.

Patient selection: history of intra-articular injection into the knee

Outcome: deep knee infection (septic arthritis, chronic low-grade infection)

Risk factors for deep knee infection:

(1) body mass index >= 25 kg per kg (odds ratio 2.3)

(2) corticosteroid injections (odds ratio 3.2)

(3) rheumatoid arthritis (odds ratio 2.6)

(4) injection performed by general practitioner (odds ratio 5.2)

The risk for infection increases with the number of risk factors.
