Description

Transient alopecia is fairly common after a bone marrow transplant. Vowels et al identified risk factors for poor hair regrowth which can result in a more permanent alopecia. The authors are from Prince of Wales Children's Hospital in Randwick, Australia.

Patient selection: pediatric patient with a bone marrow transplant (BMT)

Risk factors for poor hair regrowth:

(1) older age at the time of the bone marrow transplant (>= 11 years of age)

(2) chronic graft vs host disease (GVHD)

(3) history of cranial radiation

(4) conditioning therapy with either busulphan or total body irradiation

The risk of poor hair regrowth increases with the number of risk factors present.
