Description

Visser et al identified factors associated with an invasive breast cancer developing in a woman who has had resection of an ipsilateral ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS)

Patient selection: resection of focus of DCIS with 1 year follow-up

Outcome: ipsilateral invasive breast cancer

Predictors:

(1) race African-American (pooled estimate 1.4)

(2) premenopausal status (pooled estimate 1.6)

(3) detection of mass on palpation (pooled estimated 1.8)

(4) positive margins in DCIS resection (pooled estimate 1.6)

(5) high histologic grade (pooled estimate 1.4)

(6) high p16 expression on immunohistochemistry (pooled estimate 1.5)

A woman with multiple predictors may benefit from more aggessive management.
