Tserenpuntsag et al reported risk factors for surgical site infection (SSI) in a woman undergoing abdominal hysterectomy. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management to reduce the risk. The authors are from the New York State Department of Health.
Patient selection: abdominal hysterectomy
Rate of SSI observed: 1.7%
Risk factors for surgical site infection:
(1) body mass index >= 30 kg per square meter (aOR 1.8)
(2) open surgery (aOR 2.7)
(3) contaminated or dirty wound class (aOR 2.3)
(4) surgical duration >= 186 minutes (aOR 1.8)
(5) ASA status >=3 (aOR 1.7)
(6) gynecological cancer (aOR 1.5)
(7) diabetes mellitus (aOR 1.5)
The risk of a surgical site infection increases with the number of risk factors present.
