Description

Tribble et al identified risk factors for infection following the initial hospital stay. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from multiple military medical facilities in the United States and Germany.

The most common infections were:

(1) skin and soft tissue infections

(2) osteomyelitis

Risk factors for an open extremity wound infection:

(1) amputation or open fracture

(2) having an inpatient infection (CEWI or other)

(3) therapy with an anti-pseudomonal penicillin for >= 7 days

A total hospital stay <= 14 days had a higher risk for infection than a longer stay.

The risk of infection persists for years afterwards.
