Description

Thompson et al identified a number of risk factors associated with large volume blood transfusion in a patient undergoing surgery for a musculoskeletal tumor. These can help to identify a patient who have increased blood requirements prior to surgery. The authors are from St. Vincent's Hospital in Melbourne, University of Melbourne and Collaborative Centre for Clinical Epidemiology in Parkville, Australia.

Patient selection: surgery for a musculoskeletal tumor

Risk factors for large volume blood transfusion:

(1) malignant tumor

(2) bone tumor

(3) tumors in the sacrum or pelvis

(4) ASA score 3 or 4

(5) tumor diameter > 5 cm

Pediatric patients (age < 18 years) were less likely to require large volume transfusion compared to adults 18 to 34 years old (OR 0.4).
