Description

The Pediatric Investigators Collaborative Network on Infections in Canada (PICNIC) identified a number of risk factors associated with severe respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection.

Risk factors associated with admission to the ICU:

(1) history of apnea and/or respiratory arrest

(2) age < 6 weeks

(3) underlying lung disease

(4) hypoxia on admission

(5) pulmonary consolidation on chest X-ray

(6) mother native Indian or Inuit (patient of an aboriginal race)

The odds ratios ranged from 2.7 to 3.8 for these risk factors except for apnea which was 6.5.

Risk factors associated with the need for mechanical ventilation:

(1) history of apnea and/or respiratory arrest

(2) hypoxia on admission

(3) pulmonary consolidation on chest X-ray

The odds ratio were 8.8, 9.6 and 3.9 respectively.
