Description

Swenson et al identified risk factors for hospital mortality for a patient with intra-abdominal infection. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from the University of Virginia at Charlottesville.

Parameters identified by logistic regression analysis:

(1) age of the patient in years

(2) APACHE II score

(3) location in the hospital

(4) maximum body temperature in °C

(5) cardiac disease

(6) malignant disease

(7) liver disease

(8) renal disease and dialysis dependent

(9) organism AND transplant status

where:

• The Odds Ratios (OR) range from 2.1 to 5.2.

number of risk factors =

= SUM(points for all 9 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum number of risk factors: 0

• maximum number of risk factors: 9

• The risk of in-hospital death increases with the number of risk factors.
