Description

Sreeramoju et al identified risk factors for recurrent skin and soft tissue infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Keesler Air Force Base and South Texas Veterans Healthcare System.

Patient selection: community-onset MRSA skin or soft tissue infection requiring operative debridement

Outcome: recurrence of the skin or soft tissue infection

Risk factors for recurrence:

(1) obesity (adjusted odds ratio 3.4)

(2) past history of an abscess due to MRSA that required surgical debridement within the past year (adjusted odds ratio 2.6)

The recurrence was usually at a different anatomic site.

All of the institutions in the study are from Texas or Mississippi, with hot temperatures during the summer.

The type of antibiotic therapy did not appear to influence the risk for recurrence.
