Description

A serious complication of Salmonella bacteremia is endovascular infection of the aorta (aortitis) or a major branch. The risk of aortitis is increased if certain clinical findings are present.


 

Prerequisite: Salmonella bacteremia

 

Demographic findings associated with Salmonella aortitis:

(1) The male to female ratio is 3:1.

(2) Most patients are > 50 years of age.

 

Risk factors associated with Salmonella aortitis:

(1) diabetes mellitus

(2) coronary artery disease

(3) atherosclerosis of the aorta

(4) history of gastrectomy and/or peptic ulcer disease

(5) hypertension

(6) aortic valve prosthesis

(7) alcohol abuse

(8) cirrhosis

(9) renal transplantation
