Song et al reported risk factors for hypesthesia following a facial fracture. These can help to identify a patient who may require additional therapy. The authors are from Pusan National University in South Korea.
Patient selection: status post repair of a facial fracture
Risk factors for hypesthesia:
(1) direct nerve injury
(2) <= 10 mm between the fracture and the nerve foramen
(3) bone displacement > 9.1 mm
(4) age 10-29 years
The risk of hypesthesia increases with the number of risk factors present.
Most patients recovered by 6 months after surgery.
