Description

Soliman et al evaluated patients with synchronous endometrioid carcinomas of the endometrium and ovary. They identified certain risk factors which should be taken into account when a woman presents with abnormal uterine bleeding or a pelvic mass. The authors are from M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Risk factors for synchronous endometrioid carcinomas of the endometrium and ovary:

(1) young age (range from 28 to 83, with median 50 years)

(2) obese with BMI > 25 kg per square meter (36% were > 30)

(3) nulliparous (33%)

(4) premenopausal (57%)

Notes:

(1) The presence of an hereditary cancer syndrome was not considered a risk factor.

(2) The presence of diabetes (10% of patients) did not seem to be a risk factor.

(3) Women with synchronous endometrioid and serous carcinomas tended to be older.
