Description

Socias et al identified risk factors for healthcare avoidance by transgender females in Argentina. These can help to identify ways of improving healthcare delivery in this group. The authors are from Fundacion Huesped in Buenos Aires, Brown University, University of Palermo, University of British Columbia and St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver.

Patient selection: transgender women

Risk factors for healthcare avoidance:

(1) history of police violence

(2) internalized stigma

(3) history of discrimination by healthcare workers and/or patients

(4) lack of extended health insurance (having extended healthcare insurance reduced risk)

Many of the patients lived in Buenos Aires, possibly because acceptance might be better than in a smaller town. This suggests that being small community might also be a risk factor.
