Description

Singh et al evaluated solid organ transplant recipients who developed zygomycosis. They identified risk factors associated with infection and treatment outcome. The authors are from multiple university hospitals in North America and Europe.

Patient selection: solid organ transplant recipients

Reported mortality rates of solid organ recipients with zygomycosis: 49 to 71%

Risk factors for developing zygomycosis:

(1) renal failure at baseline

(2) diabetes mellitus

(3) history of therapy with voriconazole and/or caspofungin

Protective factors (reduced risk for developing zygomycosis):

(1) therapy with tacrolimus

Risk factors for disseminated disease:

(1) liver transplant

Predictors of treatment failure:

(1) renal failure

(2) disseminated disease

Predictors of treatment success:

(1) surgical resection (which indicates localized disease)

(2) therapy with liposomal amphotericin B
