Description

Silva et al identified risk factors for chronic kidney disease in a patient with vesicuoureteral reflux (VUR). This can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management of renal function. The authors are from Hospital das Clinicas and Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil.

Patient selection: vesicoureteral reflux

Outcome: chronic kidney disease

Risk factors for chronic kidney disease:

(1) age at diagnosis > 24 months

(2) VUR Grade V

(3) bilateral renal damage

(4) diagnosis > 12 months after a urinary tract infection

Several of these risk factors reflect a delay in diagnosis. Early identification of high-risk patients results in better outcomes.

Being admitted after 1990 was protective (relative risk 0.16) indicating improvement in diagnosis.
