Shree et al identified risk factors for surgical site infections (SSI) in women who have had a cesarean section. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from the University of Pittsburgh and Magee-Womens Research Institute.
Patient selection: woman havng a cesarean section
Outcome: surgical site infection (SSI)
Risk factors for a surgical site infection:
(1) chorioamnionitis
(2) resident training service
(3) tobacco use, smoking
(4) ASA class 3 or 4
(5) patient in labor as indication
Factors associated with lower risk for SSI:
(1) non-reassuring fetal distress) as indication
The risk for SSI increases with the number of risk factors present.
