Description

Shi et al identified risk factors for mortality in a child with severe pertussis. These can help to identify a patient who requires more aggressive management. The authors are from Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center and Guangzhou Medical University in China.


Patient selection: pediatric patient with severe pertussis

 

Predictors of mortality from multivariate analysis:

(1) white blood cell count > 70 * 10^9/L (OR 231)

(2) pulmonary hypertension (OR 323)

 

Clinical features of child at greater with for mortality:

(1) age < 6 weeks

(2) low birth weight for gestational age

(3) cyanosis and oxygen saturation less than 90%

(4) infectious complications (pneumonia, septic shock)

(5) multi-organ failure (respiratory, renal, toxic encephalopathy, other)
