Description

Schweizer et al reported risk factors for prolonged hospitalization and mortality in a patient with a significant electric burn. This can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive management. The authors are from UniversitätsSpital Zürich in Switzerland.

Patent selection: electric burn resulting in hospitalization (74% high-voltage injuries)

Predictors of mortality:

(1) burn involvement over a high total body surface area

(2) renal failure

(3) cardiovascular complications

(4) multi-organ failure

Predictors for prolonged hospital stay and ICU stay:

(1) burn involvement over a high total body surface area

(2) sepsis

Additional risk factors for prolonged ICU stay:

(1) limb loss (amputation rate almost 14% in study)

(2) abdominal complications
