Description

Schemmer et al identified risk factors for mortality in patients having upper gastrointestinal bleeding. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Ruprecht-Karls-University in Heidelberg.

Risk factors for mortality associated with upper gastrointestinal bleeding from the multivariate logistic regression analysis:

(1) cirrhosis (odds ratio 5.7)

(2) duodenal ulcer (on bulbus back wall, odds ratio 3.4)

Male gender was associated with increased risk but was not significant in the logistic regression analysis.

The risk of death increases with the number of risk factors.
