Safir et al reviewed risk factors associated with nosocomial transmission of MPOX virus to healthcare workers. The authors are from multiple institutions in Tel Aviv.
Situation: healthcare worker who has acquired MPOX infection in a healthcare facility
Exclusion: acquisition of MPOX by other routes
Rate of occurrence: very low
Risk factors for nosocomial transmission:
(1) failure to wear all appropriate personal protective equipment (gloves, face mask, etc) when dealing with patients infected with MPOX
(2) failure to implement contact precautions
(3) contact with fomites that have been in contact with an infectious lesion
(4) contact with a co-worker who has been exposed to MPOX
(5) delay in recognition of nosocomial transmission
(6) aerosol generation
(7) defect in PPE include needlestick injury
(8) failure to vaccinate high-risk personnel
Nosocomial transmission can occur even if personal protective equipment is worn and contact precautions are in place.
