Description

Rubinos et al reported risk factors for hospital readmission for an infant with a prolonged stay in the neonatal intensive care unit (ICU). The authors are from multiple children's hospitals in the United States.

Patient selection: prolonged neonatal ICU stay

Outcome: 30-day readmission (seen in 10.7%)

Respiratory problems were the leading cause of readmission (about one third).

Risk factors for readmission:

(1) shunted hydrocephalus (OR 2.2)

(2) gastrostomy tube (OR 2.0)

(3) tracheostomy (OR 1.5)

(4) public insurance (OR 1.3)

(5) congenital anomalies (OR 1.3 to 1.6)

(6) short gut (OR 1.5)

The risk of readmission increases with the number of risk factors present.
