Sleep apnea is common in patients with acromegaly. Rosenow et al identified risk factors for sleep apnea in patients treated for acromegaly. The authors are from the University of Cologne and the Cleveland Clinic.
Patient selection: treated acromegaly
Outcome: sleep apnea
Risk factors for sleep apnea:
(1) elevated growth hormone (GH)
(2) elevated IGF-I
(3) older age
(4) greater neck circumference
Risk factor for higher desaturation index:
(1) index finger circumference >= 8.5 cm
(2) neck circumference >= 41 cm
(3) neck circumference as percent of predicted neck circumference (PPNC) >= 100%
(4) growth hormone >= 2 mU/L
(5) body mass index > 30 kg per square meter
(6) age >= 60 years
(7) difference between current neck circumference and neck circumference prior to first symptom >= 2 cm
(8) no adenomectomy
