Patient selection: adult being discharged from the ICU
Outcome: 1-year mortality. Mortality following discharge was divided into early (<= 30 days) and late (> 30 days).
Cumulative 1-year mortality: 22%
Risk factors for mortality:
(1) age >= 65 years of age
(2) high comorbidity level prior to ICU admission
(3) greater physical dependency prior to ICU admission
(4) greater severity of illness at ICU admission
(5) ICU readmission
(6) infection
where:
• Some of these findings also correlated with frailty.
Comorbidities associated with mortality:
(1) underlying cancer
(2) cardiovascular disease
(3) chronic respiratory disease
(4) genitourinary disease
