Description

Posterior dislocations of the shoulder are uncommon. Robinson et al identified risk factors for recurrent instability in these patients. The authors are from the Edinburgh Orthopaedic Trauma Unit in Scotland.

Patient selection: acute traumatic posterior glenohumeral dislocation of the shoulder

Risk factors for recurrence:

(1) age < 40 years

(2) dislocation occurred during a seizure

(3) large humeral head defect (reverse Hills-Sachs lesion > 1.5 cubic cm)

The risk of recurrence increases with the number of risk factors present.

Recurrent trauma to the shoulder might be another risk factor.
