Description

Riachy et al identified risk factors for hemorrhagic cystitis in a pediatric patient undergoing cancer therapy. These can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive management to avoid complications. The authors are from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.

Patient selection: pediatric

Risk factors for hemorrhagic cystitis based on multivariate analysis:

(1) age >= 5 years

(2) BK virus cultured from the urine

(3) bone marrow or peripheral blood stem cell transplant

(4) pelvic radiation therapy

More severe hemorrhagic cystitis was associated with more frequent complications:

(1) bladder perforation

(2) hydronephrosis

(3) acute renal failure

(4) anemia
