Pien et al identified risk factors for sleep-disordered breathing during pregnancy. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from an intervention. The authors are from the University of Pennsylvania.
Patient selection: pregnant female
Outcome: sleep-disordered breathing
The mean apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) increased from first to third trimester, with about a third of women showing sleep-disordered breathing during the third trimester.
Risk factors for sleep-disordered breathing:
(1) higher baseline body mass index (increasing from overweight to obese, with normal < 25 kg per square meter and the odds ratio 1.9 per 5 kg per square meter increase)
(2) older age (odds ratio 3.2 per 10-year increase in age, baseline around 18 or 19)
(3) baseline AHI > 5 events per hour at baseline
