Description

Rarely significant vascular injury can occur during total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Petis et al identified risk factors for its occurrence.

Patient selection: total knee arthroplasty (TKA)

Frequency: 0.06% of primary TKA

Catastrophic vascular injury was defined as any vascular injury that required vascular surgery to repair.

Sites of vascular injury: popliteal artery and/or popliteal vein

Risk factors for catastrophic vascular injury:

(1) revision TKA

(2) tibial preparation phase of the procedure

If the problem is identified and treated promptly, then the outcome is generally good.

Complications:

(1) limb ischemia which can lead to amputation if severe

(2) vascular thrombosis
