Description

Persiani et al identified risk factors associated with morbidity following surgical treatment of gastric cancer. The authors are from the Catholic University of Rome.

Parameters associated with morbidity and length of the hospital stay:

(1) age of the patient

(2) extent of the lymphadenectomy

(3) splenectomy

(4) type of surgical procedure performed

where:

• Other surgical procedures include: Billroth I (gastroduodenostomy), Billroth II (gastrojejunostomy), Roun-en-Y esophagojejunostomy.

• The most common complications (Table 2, page 15) were fluid collection, anastomotic leakage, surgical site infection and pneumonia or respiratory failure.

number of risk factors for complications or prolonged hospital stay =

= SUM(points for the 4 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum number of risk factors: 0

• maximum number of risk factors: 4

• The presence of multiple risk factors is associated with a longer hospital stay and/or greater morbidity.

• These factors were not associated with the risk of mortality.
