Paul et al reviewed risk scores for sternal wound infections following coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. They also performed a multivariate analysis on their data for predictors of surgical site infections. The authors are from Tel-Aviv University, Rabin Medical Center and Beilinson Hospital in Israel.
Patient selection: coronary artery bypass graft surgery with medial sternotomy
Outcome: surgical site infection, including sternal osteomyelitis and mediastinitis
Predictors of surgical site infection:
(1) COPD (odds ratio 3.5)
(2) an operation in addition to the CABG (odds ratio 3.7)
(3) diabetes (odds ratio 3.1) OR pre/intraoperative blood glucose level > 140 mg/dL (odds ratio 3.3)
The risk of surgical site infection increases with the number of predictors present.
