Paul et al evaluated patients with candiduria. These can help to identify a hospitalized patient who should be monitored more closely for this complication. The authors are from Christian Medical College in Vellore, India, and Bridgeport Hospital in Connecticut.
Candida isolates were from 7 species, with Candida tropicalis and Candida albicans the most common species.
Risk factors for candiduria from the multivariate analysis:
(1) plasma glucose > 180 mg/dL
(2) recent therapy with antimicrobial agents (within past 30 days)
Additional risk factors from univariate analysis:
(1) serum albumin < 3 g/dL
(2) prolonged hospitalization (> 10 days)
Risk factors for mortality in a patient with candiduria:
(1) use of a urinary diversion device
(2) therapy with >= 2 classes of antimicrobials
(3) intensive care
(4) renal failure
