Description

Pagano et al identified risk factors for invasive fungal infections (IFI) in patients with aplastic anemia. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are members of SEIFEM (Sorveglianza Epidemiologica Infezioni Fungine nelle Emopatie Maligne) Group in Italy.


Patient selection: severe aplastic anemia

 

Aspergillus is a common pathogen.

 

Risk factors for invasive fungal infections:

(1) severe and persistent neutropenia

(2) therapy-related immunosuppression

(3) allogeneic stem cell transplant

 

Additional risk factors might be (from other hematologic conditions):

(1) history of invasive fungal infection

(2) airway colonization with Aspergillus

(3) high-dose corticosteroid therapy
